Recently released U.S. Census data from 2003 indicates that 62 million U.S. households had a computer connected to the Internet. That's over 55% of
American homes with computers. Compare that with 50% in 2001 and 18% in 1997 and you can see the drastic increase in computer ownership. By now,
that number has certainly substantially increased again. With the ever-changing technology, software updates, and upgrades that have come since 1997,
it would be interesting to know how many people still own the same computer systems as they did in 1997, 2001, or even 2003. My guess would be Hardly
Any, Some, and About Half.
It is frustrating how quickly our computer systems and software seem antiquated. If anybody out there still owns a computer from 1997, unless they have
completely rebuilt it, I can't imagine how it can even be usable. Certainly, they can't view many sites on the Web without waiting forever and probably
timing out, or run any software and games that have been made in the last few years.
